The Apple iPhone iMapMyRide App

Summary

The power of geographic information systems (GIS) and their subsequent global positioning system (GPS) applications has really allowed some of the best Apple iPhone apps to bloom into something even better. The ability to pinpoint your location with startling accuracy and then use that information to help future planning is something that has never before been available in the history of the world. The current generation has a wealth of knowledge and information at their fingertips and the Apple iPhone iMapMyRide application is just the latest example of that particular fact.

User Interaction

Interacting with the software on the part of the user is a two-step process as far as iMapMyRide is concerned. The first step has to do with launching the iPhone app and setting up the profile, which can be done in just a few minutes and with just a few commands. Once you have done that, all you need to do is turn it on and then go for a ride on your bike, getting the program to track the route you follow as you go along. At the end of the route, all that is left for the user to do is save the information and then optionally upload it to the profile created which can then be viewed at the MapMyRide.com website.

User Interface

The interface on the iMapMyRide Apple iPhone app is very straightforward. All you have are two screens. The first screen has the route mapped out as you go along and the second one has detailed about the length of your trip, the distance traveled on that trip, information about the current speed at which you are traveling and finally information about the average speed over the entire length of the trip. In the end, iMapMyRide iPhone application is very easy to look at and has a sweet color scheme to boot.

Utility and Productivity

The main purpose of most Apple iPhone apps is to make life simpler in some way and iMapMyRide certainly does that. If you wanted to duplicate the success of iMapMyRide without using any other software in the process, you would need to grab a stopwatch, a pencil, a calculator, a map and a ruler. Mapping out your route and calculating overall distance would be done with the map, pencil, ruler and calculator while getting all of the info regarding speed and time would be done with the stopwatch and the calculator. In the end, aren’t you glad that you have iMapMyRide to take care of all of that instead?

Rating

The iMapMyRide iPhone app is a sweet one, but in the end only gets a rating of 8.5 out of 10. The main reason it lost out on getting a rating of 9 or higher is that it is not really a mass appeal app like some of the others out there. It is strictly geared towards the bike-riding population and those people do not represent anywhere near a majority of Apple iPhone users. If we were only considering bike-riding iPhone users, this app would have a closer to perfect score.
