Stand By You for Android is a beautifully crafted post-apocalyptic tap-through visual novel that truly entertains and amazes the readers. It is a sequential story app that follows the life of a high school student who wakes up to find a vastly different world than the one he had last seen. Filled with fascinating dialogue and art, Stand By You app draws the reader in to a world of fiction that you don’t want to exit. The app may be downloaded for $4.99 from Google Play Store.

What is in store?

Stand By You for Android features about 3-5 hours of story said from a first person narrative. A peaceful ambient soundtrack in the background varies with the chapters. The story-line mixes the post-apocalyptic genre with a messianic figure who appears shrouded in mystery. You read the story as in a Kindle. Simply tap on the screen to progress the story. The controls are intuitive. It provides multiple ways to control the speed of the text (e.g. swiping right to left fast forwards the story, swiping downward displays the text history, tapping with three fingers skips forward through the text, and tapping longer than a second auto scrolls the text). On reading each box of test, you can move the story forward by tapping on your phone screen. You can also pause and later resume by clicking on corresponding buttons on screen. Apart from reading the story, you can listen to the musical soundtrack (tap Listen to Music) or view the different artwork (tap View CG) by clicking on the appropriate buttons on the main Title screen.

On the flip side, some users have complained that it is not easy to minimize or exit the app. The app uses the full screen and doesn’t include any easily discernible Exit option. Users on phones with only on-screen Home and Back buttons might have a difficult time minimizing the app. It is also advisable to read the Operating Manual before reading the story. It solves some usability issues. Stand By You has some great artwork that acts as the background to the text. The text font is similar to old-school RPGs and is simple to read. The layout is tailor-made for a visual sequential Android novel. The app requires Android OS versions 2.3 and upwards.

Stand By You for Android has an average 4 hours of playability. It has an intriguing storyline that is a delight to read. Yes, it has only limited reply-ability. But you can still listen to its soundtrack or view the artwork. It would have been great had the exit option be made easier to all Android UIs. The price tag is a bit steeper. But it is up to the user to decide whether or not it is worth $4.99. Check it out if you are in the lookout for tap-through visual novels with interesting plots.
