When you’re trying to show others an example of something, screenshots certainly helps. SCR Screen Recorder Pro for Android let you create screencasts directly on your phone. Now, here is the catch: the app runs only on rooted phones. You can get the app for $6.14 from Google Play Store. The app is also available in a thinned down free version.

SCR Screen Recorder Pro for Android uses hardware accelerated video encoding to achieve best quality screen recording on any device. It’s the only video recorder on the market supporting Tegra device including Nexus 7. When you first install the app, it requests root access through whatever Superuser app you have installed. Yes, you got to grant the app admin access so as to use it properly. A small menu with start, settings and exit button appears. Further, there is a notification icon displayed in system tray.

Click on ‘start’ to begin the recording session. Tap on the quit button (power symbol) to close SCR completely. You got lots of customization options to tinker with concerning the video that is produced. For example, you can change the resolution, file format, bitrate, target framerate, audio sampling rate etc. In order to stop capturing video, either lock the screen for two seconds or reopen the SCR app after you’ve started recording. The app is pre-configured to stop recording when the screen is turned off. But you can disable this feature from the associated settings.

By default, SCR Screen Recorder Pro Android app displays a small dot where you touch the screen. This is a sort of visual feedback and interestingly, it even appears on the screencasts when enabled. Performance wise, the recorded video quality is good. You can also record an audio track through the mic if you wish to narrate the screencast. The app uses 16 MB RAM while running.


SCR Screen Recorder Pro for Android is a great screencast app. However, it requires root access, which makes it unusable on some handsets. It displays only a minimal menu on the screen and this allows you to go about the recording without any visual menus obstructing the screen. Customization options come handy. Verdict: Check it out.
