Features

The retro pixilated Paul Pixel – The Awakening game for iPhone is beautiful. Even though it is done up in and-crafted pixel art, lots of details can still be found in the game. The colors range from nice and vivid brights to darker, gloomier tones. The animations are slick and smooth. The chiptunes made on an original Commodore C64 SID is a throwback to the yesteryears. The game starts with a cutscene that is done very well, and it sets up the plot for the game. In the beginning, you’ll see a giant spaceship hovering over the skyscrapers, emitting familiar beeps and boops. The ship unleashes a horde of brain-eating zombies unto the Earth, causing chaos and destruction. Then you will find Paul relaxing at home, until he turns on the TV to find out that his city is under quarantine. Now it is up to Paul Pixel to save the world.

The controls follow the traditional point-and-click techniques of the games of yesteryears. But they’re still optimized for present day touch screens. To get Paul move, simply tap on where you want him to go. To interact with objects on screen, just tap on them. Tapping on small items allows you to carry them in your stash, wherein you can access them by clicking on the hand icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen. Select an item you wish to use, and it turns up in Paul’s hand. While the controls are easy to use, they’re a bit clunky at times. Also, there is no way to go through the dialogues faster. A way to advance the text would have come handy. The difficulty levels are manageable. There are plenty of puzzles in Paul Pixel – The Awakening game for iPhone to keep you engaged for minutes on end. The game requires iOS 8.0 or later.

Conclusion

Paul Pixel – The Awakening game for iPhone is a point-and-click adventure with beautiful pixel art and bombastic retro sound. The game play is similar to old games like Maniac Mansion and Zac McKraken, but here you get to hold the current item in your hand. The difficulty levels are moderate. Controls work just fine but could use further refinements to make it more intuitive. The app is also stable. Check it out if you love point-and-click adventure games.
